Reasons to Wear Sunglasses

Do you like to wear sunglasses? If so, you’ll appreciate these five reasons why you should consider donning shades more often.

Function and Fashion: 5 Reasons To Wear Sunglasses

People love sunglasses, as the sales numbers show. The sunglasses market in the United States generates more than $4 billion in annual revenue. These versatile accessories are not only fashionable but functional as well. A good pair of shades can protect your eyes while helping you look amazing in the process. Learn more about this popular type of accessory, as well as five reasons to wear sunglasses more often.

Top Reasons To Wear Sunglasses

There are a lot of reasons to put on shades anytime you’re going to be out in the sun. Even on overcast days, sunglasses can help protect your vision. Here are the top reasons to start wearing sunglasses more regularly.

1. Prevent Damage to Eyes

You probably already know that UV rays from the sun can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Did you know that those same UV rays can also damage your eyes and potentially impact your vision? When you wear sunglasses, you protect your eyes from some of the damage caused by the sun’s rays, as the shades reflect harmful light away from the eyes.

Another way sunglasses can protect your eyes is by shielding them from debris. When the wind is blowing or you’re out playing on the beach, the last thing you want to deal with is sand or dirt in your eyes. If you’re wearing sunglasses, the chances of you getting something in your eyes is much lower.

2. Reduce Headaches

People who are prone to headaches or migraines often report that sunlight makes the condition worse. If you tend to get headaches when you’re outdoors on sunny days, putting on shades may help. When you wear sunglasses, you block some of the sun’s too-bright rays from reaching your eyes. This can help minimize your chance of developing headaches while still allowing you to soak up the sun’s warmth.

3. Keep Wrinkles at Bay

Everyone develops wrinkles if they live long enough, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit back and allow it to happen to you without trying to fight it. In addition to following a moisturizing skincare routine, you can also slow down wrinkle development by wearing sunglasses.

When you wear sunglasses, you reduce the urge to squint when you’re outdoors or driving on a sunny day. Squinting is one of the primary causes of forehead and undereye wrinkles, and may also cause you to develop crow’s feet prematurely. To keep your face looking silky smooth and youthful for as long as possible, make it a habit to put on a pair of sunglasses every time you leave the house. You should also keep a pair in your car at all times so you can quickly put them on whenever it’s bright outside.

4. Complete Your Outfit

Another great reason to wear sunglasses whenever you go out is to complete your outfit. Sunglasses come in a variety of fun styles and can complement any wardrobe, whether you’re sporting a casual t-shirt and jeans or you’re turning heads in leather.

Anytime you want to enhance your appearance, just reach for a pair of your favorite shades. You’ll instantly feel more attractive, which can be helpful when you’re looking for a quick confidence boost.

5. Reduce Glare While Driving

The final reason to wear sunglasses more often is to reduce glare. There’s a reason cyclists and drivers are almost always wearing sunglasses. When you’re in control of a vehicle and safety is paramount, you want to make sure your vision isn’t obstructed in any way. A quality pair of shades can reduce glare from the sun so you can clearly see where you’re going and who’s around you.

It may sound dramatic, but wearing sunglasses could literally mean the difference between life and death for you as a driver and for other motorists or pedestrians in your vicinity. Some sunglasses can even enhance colors for people with color blindness or other vision conditions. Anything you can do to improve your ability to see others while you’re driving is worth doing!

The History of Sunglasses

When you wear sunglasses, do you ever wonder where these important pieces of eyewear came from? Here’s a brief history of sunglasses and how they came to be an important staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe.

It appears that sunglasses may be traced all the way back to prehistoric times. The Inuits created makeshift goggles with narrow slits to block some of the glare from the snow. These goggles likely prevented or at least reduced the likelihood of developing snow blindness, which is a painful condition that occurs when the eyes are exposed to strong reflections of light off the snow. The Inuits may have rubbed these goggles with soot or gunpowder to further reduce the glare of the sun off the snow.

Later, it’s believed that the first pair of darkened glasses were produced in Italy in the 1400s. In the 1700s, James Ayscough, an English optician, recommended tinted eyeglass lenses for certain vision problems. From there, advancements began to be made in the design, and by the 1920s, more people began to wear sunglasses.

In 1936, the first polarizing lightweight filter for sunglasses was produced by inventor Edwin H. Land. Soon after, these shades were marketed specifically to pilots for their anti-glare properties. It didn’t take long for outdoor enthusiasts to realize how beneficial polarization technology could be for protecting their eyes while outdoors.

Thankfully, today’s shades are much more stylish than their earliest counterparts. Over the centuries, sunglasses have undergone many transformations, and modern shades are made to be lightweight, comfortable and attractive. They are now mainstream and practically everyone has at least one pair.
